Do you have a therapy, product, good or service that is of interest to MSers?

Consider advertising on this podcast.

Reminders on this segment only cost $0.03 per reminder per download of an episode. (A $30CPM targeted at MSers.)

It can/should lead to a full ad, in text, audio or video, which costs $3.00 per download.

That sounds expensive until you do the math and realize that if nobody downloads it it costs you nothing, unlike print, where you often can't even get an ad in to the specialized journals, or radio or TV where you'd just be wasting your money with the 0.0833% MSers rate of return. (That's about six times "below" the level of "statistical noise".)

But MSBPodcast is 100% in your market, and you only pay per download of your material.

No play, no pay.

"Synthesis:"

Part I.

Thank [insert deity name here] that I'm a product of "La Révolution Tranquile".

All religiosity was driven from me by the excesses of hypocrisy inherent in the system.

Part II.

The WTC towers came down because the supporting members along the outer wall bowed and "snapped" caused by the stresses of supporting the floors. Don't look for conspiracy where there isn't any.

But that doesn't mean that the government wasn't sleeping at the switch. (Very profitably for some people.)

Terrorism requires that people "not" be resigned to their ultimate fate, but instead be deluded into thinking that they have a chance. (The best enemy to have to be paid to "defend against," is one that you cant kill. The "War on Terror" is eternal because "anyone" can be the enemy at any time.)

Part III.

Bankers don't care about what you own, but they do care about what you owe, everything.

The economy of the United States has done wonderfully since it got off the gold standard. Apart from the Crashes of 1909, 1929 and the subsequent Great Depression, a couple of world wars, Vietnam and a few clashes, adventurism, the occasional recessions and bombings.

The United States became the richest country in the history of the world. (Okay, Nixon was an utter prick when it came to setting up a heath care system with any kind of future, instead setting up HMO's, but what of that? He did end the war in Vietnam and started a "raprochement" with China [who are now the major suppliers of everything left that our lower and middle classes can afford to buy and hold a major portion of our foreign debt.])

But these days, with a declared war against an undeclared enemy, tax cuts for the rich, "meh! Not so good..."

(Not just your piddling few thousand a year tax cuts either; these people, [who make up a vanishingly small portion of the population,] earn more "per second" that we are likely to see in our "entire lifetimes" [specially we MSers.])

(The power of compound interest is that, after a few centuries, a small investment becomes staggeringly huge. These people don't work for their living, "you" work for their living.)

And there's all those weapons to buy and to pay for...

I wouldn't mind for paying for something I could use, but what am I going to do with a cruise missile? You can't fire one of those indoors.

This film should really have pissed off some people, on both sides of the ideological "line in the sand."

..

And for those who wonder about the Carlyle Group, here's some information from a Dutch source.

---- "Think for Yourself" by: "George Hrab" http://www.geologicrecords.net/

"Conclusion:"

If the allegations are true, it doesn't matter, because everybody dies, even the richest die, even the bankers.

But I don't really want anybody to feel he can make my life miserable, just because he can.

Recording all of your transactions in an implantable chip is a fool's errand. Only a complete idiot would trust something that can be hacked, unless its backed up by layers of external systems.

But they could make life hell (and believe me, we MSers know what that hell can be just trying to get up out of a chair,) for anybody if there is "any" possibililty of wiping you off the face of the grid.

msb-0203 Neuroprotection

intro

Feedback comes first, so...

There are lots of podcasts focusing on lots of different topics that never get covered in the commercial media.

This speaks very very poorly for our own media's preoccupation with finances.

They can't "afford" to take any risks as they are all locked in battle for the scarce resource of airtime.

And we are "all" the poorer for it.

Information that would enrich our own lives is disregarded in favor of something that the advertisers want, something inoffensive and bland that wont interfere with the ads while reaching the maximum number of people.

"Thesis:"

This episode's theme involves something called neuroprotection.

I initially heard of neuroprotection while listening to a podcast from the ABC (the Australian Brodcasting Corporation,) called "All in the Mind" [ http://www.abc.net.au/rn/allinthemind/default.htm ] hosted by Natasha Mitchell.

I'm actually torn about telling you about what neuroprotection is and just bitching at how lousy a job traditional media does of reporting the facts.

This stuff "matters", not what kind of underwear "Britney" is wearing, or not wearing.

So, she shaved her head. Its not like we haven't all seen what else the idiot shaves, on the internet. She probably look like she was wearing a huge deformed tarantula otherwise.

---- "mother" by: "sugarglider" http://www.sgrocks.com/

"Synthesis:"

From an article [ http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/53700.php ] by "Medical News Today":

"Neuroprotection is the mechanisms and strategies used to protect against neuronal injury or degeneration in the Central Nervous System (CNS) following acute disorders (e.g. stroke or nervous system injury/trauma) or as a result of chronic neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis).

The goal of Neuroprotection is to limit neuronal dysfunction/death after CNS injury and attempt to maintain the highest possible integrity of cellular interactions in the brain resulting in an undisturbed neural function.

There is a wide range of neuroprotection products available or under investigation and some products can potentially be used in more than one disorder, as many of the underlying mechanisms of damage to neural tissues (in both acute disorders and in chronic neurodegenerative diseases) are similar. Products with neuroprotective effects are grouped into the following categories:
  • Free radical trappers/scavengers
  • Anti-excitotoxic agents
  • Apoptosis (programmed cell death) inhibitors
  • Anti-inflammatory agents
  • Neurotrophic factors
  • Metal ion chelators
  • Ion channel modulators
  • Gene therapy"
This is useful to know for all kinds of injuries and other insults to our nervous systems.

I probably would never have heard of this on the media except for the athlete who broke a vertebrae and the doctor put the guy on ice, and everybody ran stories about the procedure; on the damn sports. Not even on the news... On the friggin' sports.

---- "Mother" by: "Smeer" http://www.smeer.com/

"Conclusion:"

Podcasting enriches us all all, all over the planet, because its is not locked is a life and death struggle for the artificial scarcity known al the air waves.

And it looks like the next time I get a twinge, I'm going for hypothermia to reduce the inflammation. Back in Ottawa, Canada, all that took some months was just stepping outside. (brrrr! Cold as a witch's tit.)

When I was young, life stretched out before me; now I am older and it doesn't stretch out as far; mother's life seems to be pretty well stretched out and the elastic going to break.

How dense do you have to be "not" to realize that you are on a moderated blog/podcast and that I'll never, never, never let that kind of crap on?

I guess that these people don't speak English. They certainly don't read it. (Then again, the comments came from Tokyo. It's probably just some disinterested kid working for minimum wage trying to fill blog comments. Tough luck kid... Now make like a bird and flock off.)

Oh and there was one idiot who I actually let post comment spam on the blog at msb-0195 and had fun exposing the comments' (il)logical fallacy and tearing through him (or her, the person who posted is extremely shy and has no profile on blogger, [meaning that its nothing more than offensive spam.])

Its even more fun to go digging through the Podsafe Music Network (the PMN) looking for tunes.

That I happen to be able to keep a small, but growing, crowd of downloaders entertained is just a peachy-keen plus for me.

Why shouldn't we MSers have the chance to play on the net?

Because of the advertising model of this show, it's giving an opportunity to some people/companies/corporations who make stuff for us MSers to reach us MSers, without having to dilute their message into mere sound bites.

I changed them and they changed me.

But it gave me some focus outside of myself. (The view is always better when its of something other than your own navel.)

I got back into media in a major way, gave a great deal of thought to the thunderbolt of inspiration that struck me as I was sitting in front of the Manhattan Campus of Metropolitan College of New York, and ... everything changed.

---- "Idealist" by: "Oswald" http://www.oswaldtheband.com/

"Thesis:"

MSBPodcast is an unusual media phenomenon because it turns sideways the usual metrics by which media are measured.

Its not tied to any geographic location. National boundaries mean very little to the podcast or to the podcasters involved.

Its not tied to any specific linguistic grouping, though each podcaster is responsible for responding to the needs of the linguistic group to which that podcaster belongs.

---- "What's The Big Idea" by: "8stops7" http://8stops7fanclub.com/

"Synthesis:"

The thing you eventually notice when you're blogging or when you're podcasting is that your readership or audience is truly international.

Readership or audience response can come from literally anywhere that people have an internet connection.

That is as much a problem as it presents an opportunity.

The problem is that there is no model economic model which deals with anything that doesn't respect the artificial boundaries called nations.

Nations separate people from one another and divide them with nothing more than lines on a map. (Nations should be based on more than the the negotiated whims of an ancient power elite. The rules of the United Nations are primarily dedicated to the maintenance of those boundaries, often in the face of common sense. [Iraq was created in the early twentieth century from the remnants of the Ottoman empire, slicing across three main ethnic boundaries {Kurdish, Sunni and Shiite (sound familiar?)} and utterly ignoring the smaller boundaries of several other groups.] The only reason for the initial existence of Lebanon [or for Vietnam,] is the French love for beach-front property.)

The opportunity is that, while there aren't yet a series of laws for dealing with podcast, there are international laws and bodies drawn up to deal with things like commerce. (Regardless of how flawed the individual nations might be.)

The metrics by which traditional media are measured, (which are a mixture of time-on-air, the time of day, a transmitters range audience and audience share, [population living under the potential range of the transmitters,] depend on several factors which are at best guess-timates) don't really provide realistic figures; they are merely best-guess figures.

The metrics of internet advertising over the medium of podcasting are fundamentally different because they are not limited by a transmitter. They are based on actual message delivery.

They are international in nature, going anywhere there's a phone line or a cable connection.

The only boundary they really respect is one of language (and most people on this planet speak more than one [sorry my American readers/listeners, but its true,] while they favor one, they can understand more.)

English is spoken or at least understood in places all over the world.

Portuguese is spoken wherever the Portuguese sailed (which explains Brazil and the Philippines.)

Spanish is spoken wherever the Spanish conquered (which explains Central America and the rest of South America.)

Dutch is spoken wherever the Netherlands had influence (like South Africa)

French is spoken wherever they had beaches.

Russian is spoken wherever they extended their influence.

Arabic is spoken wherever they extended their influence as well.

Chinese is a special case because they had an ideographic alphabet so that you didn't have to speak it to write it, (just years of training in calligraphy :-)

There are literally thousands of sub-groupings we could make along linguistic lines and the range wherever people went, for whatever their reasons, cut up any map into a crazy patch-work quilt of overlaid material.

That is the "reality" of where we are and what we find ourselves doing.

MSers have an opportunity to exploit the internet and the possibility of doing so because people often use many languages to express themselves and that overlap in the linguistic crazy quilt offers us the means to do so.

---- "No Idea" by: "ericP" http://ericp.dyndns.org/

"Conclusion:"

Instead of imposing some constraints on the advertisers, MSBPodcast.com uses a reactive model which charges the advertisers per download, instead of charging them on some illusory audience share.

There is more that was touched on in the synthesis but those topics will have to wait for their own mini-essays.

msb-0198 A Slender Glass Thread (part "deux":-)

Feedback comes first, so...

I'm back to the essay form to continue what I'd started in the previous episode.

First...

Remember back around episode "msb-0072 'Feeling allright..." I told "Have Myelin" [ http://wordsalads.blogspot.com/ ] that I'd tell Apple that iTunes needed closed captioning.

Well guess what the cat dragged in? Closed captioning for iTunes.

Now I have to figure out what the production of closed captions is like. (Its one thing for the darn thing to finally do it, its another thing for me to figure out how to tell it to do it. [ I'se gots me some reading to do...])

Next....

"Alors les Francophones, vous attendez apres quoi exactement? L'offre est encore bonne. Joignez vous a MSBPodcast.com et creez un podcast en Francais"

"Dann die Deutschen warten Sie, nach denen genau? Das Angebot ist noch gut. Verbinden Sie hat Ihnen MSBPodcast.com und Verursachen Sie ein podcast auf Deutsch."

Reach the MSers who would buy your therapy, product, good or service, with-out having to waste your advertising money on anyone who is "not" interested...

"Thesis:"

TCP/IP is bringing about programming that is an addition to, not a competition with, the landscape of media.

---- "Smoothie King" by: "Smallfish" http://www.smallfishadventures.com/

"Synthesis:"

I don't feel threatened by, nor do I feel myself to be any threat to, the oligopoly that's is scrabbling for the scarce resource, the air waves.

MS garners no air time because it is much too small a demographic to be worthy of their attention. They have too much invested in their own infrastructure to devote any time to it. Airtime is considered a precious resource and 0.0833% frankly isn't worth the bother.

I am not in competition with them nor are they in any competition with MSBPodcast.com because TCP/IP and asynchronous podcasting/podcatching is capable of handling the traffic of both without hindrance.

The power of the asynchronous TCP/IP is enormous.

Traditional mass media "demands" your presence.

If you're not watching what they want, when they want, they feel "you're" to blame. (In fact they had a proposal to make you watch the ads regardless of whether you wanted to or not. Its still out there too.)

Podcasting, the medium I'm using, merely request your presence, at your convenience.

You see ads when you want them. If you're not interested, they aren't in your face.

By using podcasting to transmit the material you can pick it up whenever you are most receptive (and that's what and when and what the advertisers really want anyway [so I'm charging a premium for keeping their material on my servers.])

The material can be as detailed as the advertisers want and of whatever form they need. PDFs, audio or video, its all the same to me. (I can tell you that if I had been able to get a video of the self-injection techniques, instead of having to figure it out myself from the pictures on the box, [wrongly as a nurse explained to me months later,] I might have spared myself a great deal of pain and I might hate self-injection less [though I still feel its the wrong method to use for people who are using it in a chronic situation.])

"Conclusion:"

TCP/IP is bringing about programming that is an addition to, not a competition with, the landscape of media.

We have different spheres of influence, traditional media being on the artificially valued air waves, podcasting being on the asynchronous internet.

We should be using the medium that is appropriate to what we each are trying to accomplish.

msb-0196 Coffee's my drink of choice now!

Feedback comes first, so...

Christy Fath just wrote me to say that "insideMS" will now be called "Momentum" and will be a quarterly publication with a circulation of almost a million.

Hmmmm... The price is going up because of the cost of paper, ink and mailing are rising, and the frequency is going down from six times a year.

If you have something to say or sell, Podcasting is looking more attractive all the time.

----

I'm reading a weighty tome of a book called "Cultural Amnesia" subtitled "Necessary Memories Fron History and the Arts" by "Clive James" (ISBN: 0-393-06116-7)

It had a phrase which struck me and its sticking with me, even now, long after I've read past it:

"He was able and industrious. He didn't miss a trick. All he missed was the point." (p. 282)

He was talking about Wilfred von Oven who was a sort of "aide de camp" to to Joseph Goebbels.

Sigh... I'm kind of working with people who are able and industrious and don't miss a trick but they sort of miss the point.

Which is why I choose the text I did for my test of using a PDF file for the last download.

Apart from that:

"Alors les Francophones, vous attendez apres quoi exactement? L'offre est encore bonne. Joignez vous a MSBPodcast.com et creez un podcast en Francais"

"Dann die Deutschen warten Sie, nach denen genau? Das Angebot ist noch gut. Verbinden Sie hat Ihnen MSBPodcast.com und Verursachen Sie ein podcast auf Deutsch."

Since I produce three shows a week (more or less) that comes to over 300 per episode. (I can't believe it myself. [Then again, you're coming from all over the planet do get my shows, why couldn't I get 300 MSers to listen to me or read my blogs.])

Well, he now has ventured into my world (and welcome to it.)

He has a podcast [ http://www.jonathankatz.com/wkatz/ ] which I've already subscribed to.

I'm always amazed at how upbeat and fuckin' cheerful we MSers are the worse we feel. (I suspect people with other chronic diseases must envy us as they reach for a razor blade and a bar of soap. [You don't want the blade to slip when you're trying to slit your wrists.])

msb-0195 PDF test (Rovira Diagrams)

msb-0195 PDF test (Rovira Diagrams)

This is a test of the use of LibSyn PDF upload/download capability.

I decided to use one of my old articles from a magazine which is no longer published, but should be.

Computer Language Magazine was a good magazine (and I not saying that just because they published some of my articles.)

I chose this particular article because its sort of relevant to what I'm going through on my day job.

People are still struggling to adequately describe on-line, interactive systems for design, implementation and testing.

Rovira diagrams are one means of describing a system's behavior, using dialog syntax diagrams, from the screen "in", without getting bogged down in the actual implementation details. (It just focuses on the system's behavior.)

There are two main reasons the technique is called Rovira Diagrams:
  1. Larry O'Brien, the editor of that magazine, was a distant friend,
  2. the abbreviation of dialog syntax diagrams (DSD) was identical to Data Structure Diagrams and Larry felt it would be confusing, so they're named after "moi" (There are lots of techniques named after their formulators: Bachman Diagrams etc. :-).
Some history:

Back in 1983, I was given the task by my boss at the time, (a hospital IS administrator in Montreal, Quebec Canada,) of finding out how a Hospital Care System system had been implemented.

It was a mess as only IBM could have delivered it. It consisted of pieces of PL/I, Assembler, CICS macroes, some Cobol, as well as something that was IBM's answer to the Holy Grail, their Application Development System, a.k.a. ADS. (IBM later gave up on that particular, or should I say peculiar, version of their ADS. Later still, they tried using Smalltalk and then Java as their ADS. The search continues...*)

To complete the dog's breakfast, it was an online system which the hospital relied upon for their customer care application. It absolutely needed to be documented.

I was the, and I quote, "genius they kept locked in a back room", in another part of the hospital, (occasionally humorously referred to as the "Psych Ward," [it may very well have once been]) and I would occasionally get these "interesting" problems tossed my way.

Given my previous experience at computer languages, (I excelled at formal languages and automata and I had created a recursive descent Pascal compiler for a Keronics Point/Four machine,) I came up with a syntax to describe the interactive dialogs between human and machine.

Because of the mess of the actual implementation and of the functionality of 327x terminals, where light pens could be used as well as cursor position and single character input could be used to trigger some functionality, a feature of the syntax was that it DIDN'T rely on triggers, instead relegating them to something unimportant for the overall functioning and description of the system/application.

A few years later, for the January 1990 issue of Computer Language Magazine, I was asked by Larry O'Brien of "Computer Language Magazine" to come up with a visual representation of the dialog syntax language that I had created.

That gave rise to something he called "Rovira Diagrams."

A few years later, in January 1994, Medical Devices & Diagnostic Industry magazine ran an article by Ken Niehoff on "Using Rovira Diagrams To Specify the User Interface" (I believe they still have reprints they can send you by fax.)

Basically, it repeated my article and stated that I had come up with a good idea, with an example of how they were using it themselves.

*) And it will likely continue, since language (even computer languages) are perennially evolving things.
