I'll be posting the podcasts regularly but writing and recording all my shows on the week-end because work is going to be, uh, intense until the middle of September.

Feedback will seem erratic until further notice.

Do you have a therapy, product, good or service that is of interest to MSers?

Consider advertising on this podcast.

Reminders on this segment only cost $0.03 per reminder per download of an episode. (A $30CPM targeted at MSers.)

It can/should lead to a full ad, in text, audio or video, which costs $3.00 per download.

That sounds expensive until you do the math and realize that if nobody downloads it it costs you nothing, unlike print, where you often can't even get an ad in to the specialized journals, or radio or TV where you'd just be wasting your money with the 0.0833% MSers rate of return. (That's about six times "below" the level of "statistical noise".)

But MSBPodcast is 100% in your market, and you only pay per download of your material.

No play, no pay.

---- "Tell Me Your Truth" by: "Shelly Niebuhr" http://www.shellyn.com/

Main Topic: "Truth"

There are alway different shades of meaning and flavors of truth which cloud our meaning when we speak, unless we are talking about the final, most basic and fundamental of facts.

That's just the way life works with us humans.

Its always grays instead of black and white.

With MS some things are quite a bit rawer and starker, brought into sharp focus with high contrast, while the fuzziness that shrouds all sensation is quite a bit noisier, seen through a somewhat soiled, soft focus lens.

Yes MS is the bane of my existence but I got to work like everybody else (even if I'm trying to do it with frayed wiring and noise on the line on both incoming sensors and outgoing controllers.)

Thank whatever powers you might believe in that its possible.

With technology, teaching, training, tools and toys, we in the fortunate western "soit-disant" civilized world can achieve things which would have been utterly impossible less then a generation ago.

Think about that.

Everything, absolutely everything, has been affected by the expansion of knowledge.

The ballooning of our private universes could only have happened because of it.

---- "Searching For Truth" by: "Mike O'Hara" http://myspace.com/mohmusic

Main Topic, part deux:

Much of what we can accomplish now was unthinkable, unfathomably deep and shrouded in obscurity less that twenty years ago.

Oh the seeds were planted but the techniques for revealing those world were still to be discovered.

There has never been more knowledge,, more information and more data than exists now and the total sum of this knowledge is growing at an accelerating pace, even as we debate it.

We will find a cure for MS but I suspect that MS will prove to be entirely different than what and how we currently think of it and what and how expect it to be.

Once we have elucidated all of the mysteries lying in the so-called "junk DNA", we may find that the syndrome we currently call MS may be due to some trivial transcription error.

But correcting that transcription error will prove to be a much more, uh, subtle process that just going over the sequence with an eraser.

If we age and die because we run out of telomerase on the ends of our genes, because we blow through or wear through the cap as we live, we may sicken and die because of something analogous.

The error may be trivial and come from a variety of sources but the process of stopping it and undoing the damage wrought may be extremely non-trivial.

It may even be a NP-complete class of problem where one solution causes yet another round of problems.

But one thing is sure, we learn at an exponential rate and the applicability of the knowledge from one sphere of research is rarely limited to the domain of where it was discovered.

Hope springs eternal.

My downloads are climbing and climbing and climbing. I'm over 19,500 as of this posting.

That means that about 100 of you are listening on a download. (Of course, that's just an average as some episodes have practically no downloads while some others have over 250 downloads.)

Its not always the same 100 people as some people come and some people go; and some people are downloading prior episodes on a single visit, which explains the disparity between the "visit counters" on my sites.

And my ad for "insideMS" hasn't even appeared yet...

Main Topic: "' Nu?' So?"

"Wat's wid da yiddish? Enuff all ready... Oy! Vey ist meir!"

So... Where was I?

Oh yes, the lamentable state of the health-[don't]-care system.

Make that our own lamentable state under the health-[don't]-care system.

If it was administered properly, under a single payer system, we'd likely recoup "billions" annually (after some public outcry and demand for summary execution on some judgments. There will be some grumbling that "hanging is too good for 'em," but lets know when to cut our losses, instead of some peoples' jugulars.)

That takes care of paying exorbitantly for everything; just because, at some point down the line, we let the doctors get the better of us and now they and the hospitals, their suppliers, equipment makers and pharmacists and drug manufacturers "et alia" all have their hand out and their other hand is a fist clenched around a cudgel. We need to scale down the salaries by an order of magnitude. "What, you can't live comfortably of a few hundred thousand a year? Funny, your patients manage it just fine."

Where does that leave the insurance companies? (the HMOs [Health Management Organization] who instead manage to hang onto their profits by doling out denials to all those sick querents. [The first thing they do is deny a claim. It doesn't matter what it for, who its for or what the consequences of the denial will be... {They have certain unpleasant names for people like that, ("Torquemada" comes to mind, "Pol Pot" springs unbidden to my consciousness, basically any sociopath will do,) but I'll just refer to the systematic denial of claims as a prudent stock holder value protection move.}])

In fact, since the insurance companies don't want to be in the business of managing health, beyond the health of their stock portfolio, I say "lets let them get off the hook!" "just walk away and nobody needs to get hurt, well needlessly anyway, any further."

Just set a date by when we will have set up a single payer system, replaced the staff (bought out and transferred staff from the HMOs more likely, [Imagine, your company can save the US economy billions of dollars annually and your name isn't plastered on the side of a spitoon anymore; you don't have to pretend to be caring and compassionate another fuckin' minute {and if you "are" caring and compassionate, you don't have to pretend that you're "not", as you deny yet another claim. (Imagine being able to just fuckin' quit that dehumanizing hell-hole of a job, without having to worry about health care.)}])

---- "Save your money " by: "Lee Maddeford" http://www.leemaddeford.ch/

Main Topic, part deux:

The gummint is not, would not, and should never be, in the business of health care.

But they would be in the business of footing the bill. Since that's "our tax dollars at work", how about if they work for "us", for a change.

For less money than the US Gummint's currently wasting in Iraq, (when all that that's accomplishing is painting targets on Americans backs everywhere,) Americans could regain a competitive advantage and pay for health care.

Nixon was not the brightest bulb on the tree when he signed into law the "prepaid group health care plans", which became known as "Health Maintenance Organizations" a.k.a. HMOs, and provided profit as the incentive.

The problem is that the mix of health and wealth, health for all (all who can pay anyway, the rest of you can go crawl into a ditch and die for all we care,) and wealth for some, is that it sets up a dynamic tension where the system will oppose its own function.

Systemantically, it makes perfect sense that health maintenance organizations don't have anything to do with health, or with the maintenance thereof.

In fact, because money is an escalating principle kind of thing, HMOs have long passed the stage where they decided on your treatment based not on any health factor but instead based on their own financial health, and now the profit motive makes it a given that your claims will go unpaid or that payment will be deferred until nature takes care of the problem. (Sick people come with their own "solve by date". If you didn't solve the problem by then well it no longer matters; they're dead.)

When we were paying out of pocket for our health, we "weren't" rich. All illnesses were catastrophic.

Then came HMO, and now "they're" rich because they were siphoning the money straight from our employers' pockets, but we're "worse" off. Not only are we tied to a job with chains of fool's gold, but they now deny claims as a matter of course.

Economic improvements since the seventies have come from the increase in productivity, and we'd actually be better off "not" carrying these parasites.

After all, we're already supposed to be engaged in a symbiotic relationship with our gummint, we pay taxes after all, let's extend and deepen the connections.

---- "Old T-shirt" by: "Jake Coco" http://www.jakecoco.com/

Main Topic: " An Awful choice..."

I'm currently stuck between a "Scilla" and a "Charibdes" (a rock and a hard place.)

I have an opportunity to travel for work, but its rather like being press-ganged into the navy. Its not so much an opportunity as a demand. I don't really have a choice.

I have the prospect of spending the next four years somewhere else than here, "without" my partner, my best friend, my wife. I will be about 500 miles away. (That's about 10 hours driving time, too far to do a weekly commute for me, unlike, say, South Jersey to Jersey City which took three hours each way.)

[Update: I have to go there but only occasionally. I can stay in Jersey City and handle everything by telecommunication since the participants are spread on several continents. Yahooo!!! :-)]

When I was younger, it would have made me pause; now that I'm older and that I've got to schlep around with a cane, it really gives me a cold shiver down my spine.

I know that the United States has no health-care unless you're indigent; and that you're supposed to work for insurance (unless you're fabulously wealthy, which I definitely am not.)

While that may be fine for some, I happen to be 53 and, I would wish to retire at 65 like everybody else; but my body may decide for me that I'm done. (Basically, I don't figure I'll be, uh, walking away from another exacerbation. They have tended tended to be the catastrophic kind requiring hospitalization.)

Basically I'm unemployable. I'm on my last job. What I've already done means nothing and if I'm not able to do the work, or even "look" like I'm not able to do the work, I'm toast.

The competition is younger, healthier and, while they may be less skilled, they're also less expensive (in both salaries and benefits.)

So, I'm press-ganged into it. I've got no choice but to try, despite my reservations about my health and the rest of the whole thing.

(Oh, by the way, this barrel that I'm being held over exists "nowhere else" in the civilized, industrialized world. Once you start working for health-care benefits, you're a slave and will put up with anything, and employers know that.)

We could get by on our savings (barely) until the "old age" pensions kick-in (If you're relying only on Social Security, lord help you, cause the government won't,), except that leaves us at the mercy of the health-[don't]-care system which here in the United States which doesn't kick in while we still own "anything". I don't particularly fancy parking my wheel-chair beside a shoe-box, middle-of-road.

I guess I will use the opportunity, since I'll be so near the border, to renew my Ontario residency; then both my wife and I can look forward to becoming full-time Canadian citizens again.

Lord only knows how we'll be able to work out the pensions.

My wife has spent her entire adult life in the United States. (She doesn't have any Canadian pension.)

I have spent halt of my adult life here and I wiped out on my 401k on 911 when I cashed them in so we could have some money to live on. (They were losing almost money as I had put in so they would have all been gone by now anyway. [Yeah. Osama owes me "big time" {but in one respect I sort of owe him one for letting me see how lousy the retirement planning is in this country} ! ])

I have a little money in Canada in a pension plan (the R.R.S.P. or Registered Retirement Savings Plan) but I would have something after selling the condo here in Jersey City and be able to buy something cheap in a suburb, probably in Montreal.

I'm getting old, and tired, and sick and tired.

Its not like I wanted to do this podcast but I've got MS and we MSers are part of a silent minority.

We belong to the 500 million people living on this planet who are disabled. (I'm talking about a whole lot more than the 0.0833% of the population, the people who are living at a statistical vanishing point, who gets this damn disease. I'm talking about how "everybody" gets ignored.)

We're silent, not because we want to be, but because of the tyranny of demographics.

It neither sad or happy, its just a fact. We are rarely worth spending any resources, like money, time or attention.

If you have a product which can be used for a variety of diseases, like a cane, or a power wheeler more likely, and you think the rate of return on one of those TV ads on some late late show might bring enough revenue to make it worth it, maybe you'll run a few ads, once a quarter, (and hope that you haven't wasted your money.)

I'm watching a "PBS Wide Angle" [ http://www.pbs.org/wnet/wideangle/ ] program called "Back to School" [ http://www.pbs.org/wnet/wideangle/shows/school2/index.html ] on the trials and tribulation of children as they head back to school.

God, we've got such high class problem. (And I'm talking MS health-care [or health-don't-care] class problems here, not exactly "Where am going to eat this Thursday?" class problems.)

Some of them have life "really" tough.

I wouldn't want to be a child or a woman in some parts of the world. (Then again being a man there isn't all that great either.)

Health doesn't enter into it.

Either you're well or you're dead and kicked to the frickin' curb.

Education doesn't enter into it.

Either you're lucky enough to have picked the right parents and you know how to handle a slate and a piece of chalk, or you're pig ignorant. (We're not talking M.I.T. here.)

Its awful, horrible, terrible... I've run out of adjectives to describe how tragic it is. "Les bràs me tombes..."

And its all so senseless. (I'm not a left-wing nut but patriarchy has a lot to answer for... There is "no excuse" for how some people are treated. [Believing in "Allah" or who-ever should not be a descriptive term meaning "stupid, dirt-poor, degraded and treated worse than an insect!"])

---- "Jingle Jangle" by: "Larry Seyer" http://www.larryseyer.com/

Main Topic, part deux:

I'm undecided as to whether this show is a downer or a call to arms.

For sure, if these children were living here, we'd be running fund raisers and holding rock concerts for them. (But there are people in Appalachia who are almost as badly off. [Oxycontin, meth and crank take the edge off being dirt poor, don't they? {Better living through fuckin' chemistry...}])

But just because they're living, make that existing, in some some place that a long sequence of conquerors forgot about, after the natural resources got too expensive to guaranty a huge rate of return, does that mean that we should all fall down on the job of being proper human beings?

No wonder the third world hates itself, almost as much as it hates us, almost as much as we just don't seem to care, and grind their filthy little faces in it.

We'll keep on driving in our Hummers and SUVs without giving a thought to where the oil and gas come from, or where the exhaust fumes go.

We'll order ice for our high-balls from Antarctica, quickly before it melts and turns from fields of snow and ice into swamps filled with guano and penguin cadavers.

We'll lull ourselves with homilies about brotherly love while the rest of the planet seethes with barely repressed anger at the cavalier way we've ignorantly thrown the future away.

Throw another shrimpy kid on the barbecue, and the hell with tomorrow.

[phew] I got to stop watching shows that make me wax eloquent with rage.

My word! My numbers are climbing (good thing I know its because people can pickup my old shows. I don't kid myself that its because of actual popularity.)

I'm closing on 18,000, if I haven't passed it by the time this gets posted (never-mind when I've podcast this episode.)

Even with a $30 CPM, that means that if some advertiser had been with me since day one, (that means their reminder would have run 175 times since January 2006 for only $540.00. Not tens of thousands, only $540.00!)

The cost of the actual ad would have depended on how popular the product was. If it wasn't, it would have cost the advertiser nothing more that the initial development costs.

And I fully expect this transmission rate, and download growth rate, to settle down once new listeners get caught up. Now I have to work on getting more new listeners. A depressing prospect at best.

Main Topic: "Uh? What Happened To The News?"

I just watched the news and I can tell you that we're "never" going to get any coverage there.

ABC evening news only has 30 minutes to cover an entire planet.

Their coverage is limited to recounting that something occurred here and there but there is absolutely no depth and no time for depth, no time for any analysis.

Its merely a recounting of events without a whisper as to why, as to the reason behind the events.

There was a leak of radio active water into the ocean after the latest quake to hit Japan, but not a peep about why anyone would want to build a N-plant there or about the way they chose to construct the plant. (Remember, this was "only" a 6.6 quake on the Richter scale. They have a potential for much, much worse.)

And they only report on things with major foot prints.

Discovering cures for things don't make the news unless a large enough number of people are afflicted.

The common cold gets far more coverage (read "air time") than MS because of that.

Heck, avian flu gets more coverage than MS because of the potential for contracting it.

Never mind that, world-wide, there are five million people with MS, as opposed to less than 500 people who have contracted the H5N1 virus.

I guess people aren't much good at comparing orders of magnitude.

That's 5x10^6 or so actual cases versus 5x10^2 or so actual cases. (I guess they think "Its just a bunch of zeros, so what difference could it possibly make?")

Don't get me wrong, I think that its admirable that all the health organizations are working on preventing an outbreak, but when is the last time research on MS raised that kind of media ruckus? (There's 5 million of us with crap on our faces and none of those mothers even wants to come over with their "do gooder" hankies and give our chins a "spit-wipe".)

Main Topic, part deux:

On so many facets, one person's news is another's advertising, and vice versa.

Apart from unplanned and/or uncontrolled events, like natural disasters, (not terrorist attacks [there are those who would profit from terrorist attacks, {Al Queda and the D.H.S. (Department of Homeland Security,) benefit, each in their own way,}]) basically, everything, and I mean everything, is fodder for commerce.

Therein lies the strength of commerce and of human ingenuity.

(I must be in a merchant mode; don't mind me; its residual effect of working on a business plan.)

The ambivalence that we all feel toward commerce stems from the very ambivalence of the activities carried out in the name of commerce.

Somethings seem noble and easy to get behind. (Podcasting is wonderful and great, but really, until it becomes a remunerated profession, its just a hobby, the province of amateurs.)

Somethings are just shitty jobs and nobody does them willingly.

Sadly those jobs are actually necessary so some form of incentive is necessary to make it, uh, worth doing. In this the lowest common denominator world, that means money.

The world of commerce dictates that somethings must be remunerated.

The more they are worth, like having a podcast with a specific purpose and a specific audience, like this podcast, the more they must be remunerated; compared to someone else who has an audience of people who just aren't affected/afflicted and who just don't care. (Hey I'm not blaming them, they don't have to.)

That's just the tyranny of demographics.

It affects the sellers as well the buyers. (And the cash register went "cha-ching" :-)

My mother was a librarian so I come by my love of the printed word quite naturally.

I also am a firm believer in things taking the time they need to properly develop.

Just imagine doing a full biography of anybody in only one hour.

Never happen. Not even if they're only one hour old.

It always becomes a question of what do you choose to leave out.

(That's why I always laugh at any television program which claims to be authoritative. Its easily possible to spin out a twelve volume introduction into the mating habits of elephants with sex actually being discussed in a follow-on collection. [And yet a third, eagerly anticipated, illustrated collection to follow! :-])

I love books and I just about line the walls of my house with 'em.

Not to mention all the book that my wife gets from the library. (But those get returned. :-)

And there are stacks of magazines which, uh, periodically diminish, when we've tread them and get tired of seeing them, despite their being in "neat little, though ever growing, piles," and decide to do a "trash run."

---- "Book of Sand" by: "Disparition" http://disparition.net/

Main Topic, part deux:

In a seemingly completely unrelated topic, this weekend the New York Times [ http://www.nytimes.com/ ] ran an article [ http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/08/magazine/08sociability-t.html?ref=science ] in the week0end section on "Williams Syndrome".

To quote from the article:
"Williams syndrome rises from a genetic accident during meiosis, when DNA’s double helix is divided into two separate strands, each strand then becoming the genetic material in egg or sperm. Normally the two strands part cleanly, like a zipper’s two halves. But in Williams, about 25 teeth in one of the zippers — 25 genes out of 30,000 in egg or sperm — are torn loose during this parting. When that strand joins another from the other parent to eventually form an embryo, the segment of the DNA missing those 25 genes can’t do its work."
That got me thinking of a possible genetic cause for MS.

Might our misbehaving immune system program, for want of a better word, be exhibiting the type of error caused by same type of missing instructions of the portion of our genetic response to infection.

Tearing a page from the book of life, (sorry, I'm an inveterate and unrepentant meme punster,) might the root cause of MS, and the inappropriate immune system response to some environmental trigger, be caused by just such a transcription error?

And might the trigger for such inappropriate immune system response tell us which particular "page" is missing?

(Hmmm... In my case, exacerbations seem to be triggered by the presence of the influenza virus. In MDMHvonPA's case, there seems to be a definite genetic component, as if the transcription error or the propensity for the transcription error was inherited. The disease might be in an entirely different portion of the coding for the T Cells, which are in turn used for the extremely subtle and delicate work of crafting immune system responses to different environmental triggers [relapsing/remitting] or classes of environmental triggers [progressive.])

It bears thinking about.

In any case, MS as a disease is only mysterious when you look at it at the most superficial level.

Once you understand that the perceived symptoms, the evidence that you're sick, is only peripherally related to what is really happening to you, ("viz:" your myelin is being attacked by your misfiring immune system T Cells,) things can progress from there.

You have to disregard all of the normal symptoms and the normal interpretation of these symptoms to arrive at a proper understanding of the real disease.

With music, I only have to make sure, make really sure, that its PodSafe. I don't need the RIAA or ASCAP/BMI breathing down my neck. My life is full of enough shit already.

Then, I write my own pithy, witty or annoying text. (I'll let you decide which this is. One man's wit is another's half-wit. :-)

I am of course subject to the laws concerning plagiarism, libel and so on. (If I say something, I always give attribution. It makes me look, if not learned then at least well-read.)

The rest is mere opinion pieces, my view of things.

People can call me a wit, or a half-wit but its all legal.

As for the language... Which one do you want? French or English? And do you want it fine or coarse?

It is generally mild except when something gets under my skin and really bugs my ass.

(I stay away from politics, religions and sex; like the plague. Since my audience is supposed to have MS, they are statistically likely to be old enough to hear anything I've got to say. [And if you're not, get an older kid to explain the words to you in the school yard. {Telling you not to listen would be just like waving a red cape in front of a bull.}])

But this is "not" broadcast, so the FCC has nothing to say.

You're finding me and if you don't like what you're reading or hearing, you can always stop reading the blogs or listening to the 'casts.

I don't make any claims and I don't push anything except this 'cast in your direction.

Any ads I get are/will be entirely the responsibility of the advertiser. I don't/won't take from or add to them or editorialize about them in any way. They are in control of their words and images.

---- "Retitled Lambda" by: "dotCommunism" http://evilresidence.com/dotcommunism

Main Topic, part deux:

With video, "everything" gets much more complicated. Much, much more complicated. It also gets immediately much much, more expensive.

There are lots of permissions and releases to obtain, permits and licenses to buy before you legally can shoot a single frame of film (or record a single image on your hard drive.)

The equipment to do so costs, big time, and everything and everybody involved also costs, big time. (You should go through the "B+H Pro" series of catalogs sometime. [You just wonder who the heck has that much money? {The answer is "nobody does" (but by pooling the little bits they can get off of each of you, [the fees they can charge or letting you see the finished product,] they can afford it.)}])

The real costs of media piracy are borne by everybody, even the pirate. (Eventually the parasites kill the host.) The problem is that the various AAs run the risk of no longer fulfilling their roles as society's "cleaning rasps" and becoming parasites themselves. (Yes, I've just compared a bunch of lawyers to little fish with a "penchant" for eating dead skin off the body politic, [as opposed to sharks which take bites out of swimmers! :-])

My source of information for this section of the podcast is another podcast "This Week In Media" [ http://thisweekinmedia.libsyn.com/ ] as well as what I happen to read on, in or about media.

I have been listening to them for about a year and they are a lively bunch of audio/video professional.

It is well worth the hour or so a week that I spend with my earphones on or my earbuds in (or even listening over the speakers if I happen to be home and alone [My wife doesn't want to hear about any of this podcasting stuff. {Her iPod is in a box, on a shelf, somewhere. (She's into print; [not quite a Luddite but with a much better understanding of and appreciation for the fine arts, performance arts, and the written word. {She's no dummy and she's no slouch.}])}])

It's funny, for someone who knows so much about media, and who see his place in it in a MacLuhanistic sense, I am well aware of its power and limitations.

Broadcast, which is only a little over a century old, is being displaced in our attention by the internetworked reality of podcasting, with its power to focus on what we need to read, hear and see, what can profit "us", rather than what an appallingly small number of people want to legislate we "must" read, hear and see because their economic model depends on it.

But the legislation is always based on how and what we "choose" to do. (The root of "legislate" is the Latin word "legare", or "choice".)

Trying to coerce behavior with legislation is a "fools' errand".

The best you can ever hope for is that the issue is complex enough that people will be willing to pay for "experts" and that that expertise doesn't cost too much. (But music ain't nuclear physics and everybody's got an opinion. "They may not be able to play but they sure can listen.")

History is littered with the occasional failures, the civilizations which just disappeared for no discernible reason, because their citizenry got tired of the costs and founded some other, less onerous, civilizations.

They so rarely do, do they...

Well this 4th of July holiday, my friend Eugene (I'll return to his unfortunate name in part two,) fixed my system which had suffered a kind of meltdown.

If you've been paying attention, (how likely is that, eh? :-) you know that that I had upgraded my system with an Un-interruptible Power Supply (UPS) and new hardware and software. My system was happily humming along, and then limping along, and then I suffered a loss of connectivity because ComCast suffered.

There was an opportunity for me to fall victim to a single point of failure and I effin' did.

Raaahhh!!!! There went my WAN and then there went my LAN.

My system was reduced to rubble and I was reduced to running a single computer on a single connection. My wife was less than thrilled. Her computer was off-line. I was less than thrilled. I had one computer out of four on-line, and my web-server and my storage server were among the casualties.

But Eugene, my SysAsdmin friend, came to my rescue.

I now have an encrypted, secure wireless connection to my wife's system (yay, no more friggin' lo-ong ugly wire upsetting her sense of interior decor,) and I have wired and encrypted, secure wireless connections between all my machines.

I am now looking at also getting Verizon FiOS, when it finally gets here, so I can have redundancy for getting onto the net.

Eugene insists that his name just means "good boy" and that all other, more sinister meanings and connotations aren't his fault. (Well, the discussion lasted through several glasses of "Golden Drack" and he did get my network running, so I wasn't doing more that showing that I had actually read the book. :-)

msb-0169 I'm aghast, I'm enthralled,

I'm angry, I'm smiling,

I'm spitting mad, I'm calm in the knowledge that things will be okay.

Reach the MSers who would buy your therapy, product, good or service, with-out having to waste your advertising money on anyone who is "not" interested...

Main Topic: "I'm aghast, I'm enthralled"

As you would know if you listened to the last show (well listened to my blathering on in the show,) I've been reading a book which I believe all of you should read as well:
"Understanding Disability; Inclusion, Access, Diversity, and Civil Rights" by: "Paul T. Jaeger and Cynthia Ann Bowman", ISBN: 0-275-98226-2
Whether you're currently disabled, or are still dreading it, this book has several somethings for you.

Like the clarion cry of the founders of the United States: "No Taxation Without Representation!" our cry should be "Nothing About Us Without Us!"

The book is a short 137 pages, plus thorough references and an index, but it packs "a lot" of information into those pages.

This book is well and engagingly written by two people with credentials and some experience with disability.

The book divides the topic into four parts and twelve chapters:
Part I The Social Lives of Disability
  1. The Roles of Disability in Society
  2. Social Classifications of and Reactions to Disability
  3. Disability Discrimination and the Evolution of Civil Rights in Democratic Societies
  4. Trying to Come to America: A Historical Illustration of the Classifications of Disability in U.S. Immigration Law and Policy
Part II Access and Accessibility
  1. Physical Access, Intellectual Access, and Access in Society
  2. Access and Classifications of Disability in Legal Discourse
  3. Accessibility and Technology in Application: Unequal Acces Online
Part III Social Representation of Disability
  1. The Social Significance of the Representation of Disability
  2. Representations of Disability across Media
  3. "Nothing About Us Without Us"
Part IV The Future of Disability in Society
  1. Future Social Issues for Persons with Disabilities
  2. Disability Culture in a Nondisabled Society
References
Index.
Its an enlightening read. (The reason episode 168 was so long in coming, instead of appearing spot on last Friday, was because I simply had to read this book, twice, before I could put it down.)

I could fill your ears with tales of my observations about the I.N.S. and how I saw the suffering they induced in people simply because they could. (There is no more effective way to bring out venality in people than to give control over something that other people need. The I.N.S. has control of something we applicants need, citizenship, and, even if they didn't start out that way, they become utterly insufferable over time. [And that's just the way it is. A health-{don't}care worker will become abusive over time. Its just the (human) nature of the beast. {I'd like to write a book called: "Tomorrow's Monsters" Subtitled "Today's Saints". }])

As much as I rail against hiring the incompetent, I believe that everybody should take a forced career break of at least a year, every six years. They can then take a rest from the vicissitudes of the day-to-day and recharge their humanity before deciding if they want to resume the grind and the hazards of their jobs.

Main Topic, part deux:

Given how I'm such a Podcasting enthusiast, I enjoyed reading the chapter on "Representations of Disability across Media" for all the wrong reasons.

That's because we can use the internet to make an end run around broadcast media and bypass the problem of demographics entirely.

Even with 500 million people across he planet being disabled, we, the disabled and potentially disabled, are shut out of any media on the basis that we aren't "representative." Its simply "not" cost effective to each out to us, specially if the advertisers have to drill down to find subgroups, like MSers, with our measly 0.0833% of the general population.

Broadcast media is hopelessly and forever out of reach.

But the very fact that this podcast exists and that it has garnered an audience of people who have stumbled upon it (my ad still hasn't appeared in "insidems" yet,) means that the audience of interested people are self-selecting right now.

Well okay, the very fact that this podcast exists is due to "my" needing an outlet, a voice, a place to vent.

But you, my gentle audience/readers, are still here, and I don't really care if its the music or the topic.

The occasional feedback make it worth my hagning around.

So what's "the word"?
